A Complete Moving Guide: Practical Information and Tools for Tenants

One Month Before Moving

  5. Start decluttering: Begin sorting through your belongings and decide what to keep, sell, donate, or discard. Start selling or donating items you no longer need.
  6. Arrange new schools: If you have children, research and contact schools in your new area. Begin the enrolment process and gather the necessary documentation for transferring your children’s education records.
  7. Organize insurance: Contact your insurance providers (homeowner’s or renter’s insurance) and inform them about your upcoming move. Discuss policy changes or updates required for your new residence.
  8. Purchase new furniture required.
  9. Hire skip and organise dispose of rubbish.

Three Weeks Before Moving:

  1. Finalize moving arrangements: Select a moving company and schedule your moving date. Confirm all details and logistics.

  5. Finish food in freezer.

One Week Before Moving:

  1. Confirm details with the moving company: Reconfirm the moving date, time, and any special requirements with your chosen moving company.

  3. Move packed boxes to garage.
  4. Clean and organize: Clean your current apartment thoroughly including windows, ensuring everything is in good condition for the final inspection.

  6. Inform neighbours and friends: Let your neighbours and friends know about your upcoming move and provide them with your new address and contact information.
  7. Organize pets for moving day.
  8. Defrost fridge and clean fridge.

One Day Before Moving:

  1. Pull apart any furniture ready.
  2. Gather all keys.
  3. Get a good night’s sleep.
  4. Disconnect washing machine.
  5. Check all cupboards are packed.
  6. Pack car with any items.

Moving day

  1. Place carpet, floor, and door frame protecters throughout

  4. Leave a note with your new address so the new owners can forward your mail.

Moving in

  1. Clean your new home.
  2. Pick up any mail being held at post offices.
